The Mill x SCAD

Week 2 : Sept. 16 - 22

Mentor Notes for Team KESS Week 2

  • David: shots 4 5 6 unclear, verbal walkthrough
  • Emily: Why is there a red skittle on the palette? where did it come from and why is it only one color? More surprising way to introduce the red skittle on the palette. Maybe theres a pack or bag and pouring it out like its the last one.
  • Mazyar: all of them are black and white and the red one stands out, like it appears special from the other skittles. Needs production design and film help with costumes and environment. End card, and fonts at the end.
  • David: do they break skittles in commercials? make it look beautiful and appetizing. Put energy in the beauty aspect.
  • Chris: brands are careful with how they depict their products. Have a sense of how they usually present their things. Good thing in general to consider
  • Emily: Look at The Mill skittle commercials, fun factor is there. A lot of them have a character thats eating and benefiting from the weird and quirky thing in the skittles. “mmm yes keep painting” red one makes him go “ooo” and he keeps eating them and painting
  • Incheol: questioning the intention on the center skittle placement. Make it different.
  • Mazyar: Have the painting a little bit bigger, feels low res, skittles too big, whole canvas bigger but have more detail and more skittles
  • Professor Fowler: talk over your previs specifics are good

Team KESS Adjustments:

  • Update: Changing DaVinci into a female artist during the renaissance, most likely going to be Sofonisba Anguissola
  • Problem: Why is there a red skittle on the palette? where did it come from and why is it only one color? More surprising way to introduce the red skittle on the palette.
  • Solution offered by mentor: Maybe there is a pack or bag and pouring it out like its the last one.
  • Solution thought by KESS: World is black and white except skittles, every flavor of skittles always in color.
  • Feedback from Mazyar: Needs production design and film help with costumes and environment. End card, and fonts at the end.
  • Solution: Sydney has contacted MOME person and has found someone with awesome costume and Hair and Makeup artist.
  • Problem: Still searching for Actress to play Artemisia
  • Feedback from DB: do they break skittles in commercials? make it look beautiful and appetizing. Put energy in the beauty aspect.
  • Solution: No longer going to show Destruction of a skittle, instead going to highlight the detail of it and do another simulation to accentuate beauty of the skittle.

Skittles Material Reference alongside all the other skittles in my tummy :).

XPU Skittles Look-Dev V.1
CPU Skittles Look-Dev V.1

Noise is still prominent in both renders; I need to understand the Karma settings better. The USD workflow is starting to click, and using Solaris is becoming very enjoyable. I seem to be pushing it quite far, as I’ve been experiencing frequent crashes. I’m working on improving my workflow habits. Overall, I’m happy with how the Skittles Look-Dev R&D is progressing and look forward to hearing feedback.

Used Luma AI for the first time to scan this Easel Asset for our commercial and for a better CG integration. Scan came out really well and overall it is an extremely powerful tool. Read in the .obj and the .ply (scene mesh) and used houdini 20.5s COPs to extract and bake the texture to use.

Turntables with the HDRI we shot when filming.

Week 3 Previs: We shot our footage at Anderson Hall, where Sydney (DP) took the lead and followed the storyboards to capture a nice previs.
